While we primarily talk about "fake baking" here on Local Tanning Salon, I thought it was important to remember some basic rules apply to natural sun tanning as well.  So take some time and review the tips below to ensure you have a safe summer tanning season!

  • Use tanning lotion with an SPF suitable for your skin type
  • Just because you have a "base" tan doesn't mean you can't burn.  The sun is hotter and more powerful in the summer months so be careful.
  • Take it slow! If you rush your tan you'll either get a regretful burn or do serious damage to your skin.
  • Don't forget to re-apply sun tan lotion after you come out of the water or sweat a lot.
  • Use an after care lotion product with a moisturizer built in such as aloe vera.
  • If you have children apply water proof high SPF lotion every 1-2 hours.
  • If you get s severe burn see a doctor to protect against infection and long-term damaging effects.
  • Remember, water acts to magnify the suns rays.  If you spend time on a boat or in the water take extra care and use a higher SPF then normal.

Most importantly is to use your common sense.  If you ever hear yourself saying, "I should re-apply some lotion, but I just don't feel like it," make sure you listen and re-apply.  You'll regret not doing so later that night when you have the chills and can't sleep from the burns you got.
